Skullgirls

Skullgirls is a fast-paced 2D fighting game that puts players in control of fierce female warriors in an extraordinary Dark Deco world. We created Skullgirls to bring back the sheer inventive fun of classic combo-crazy 2D fighters without the abusable gameplay issues that they are also remembered for, and we coupled it with some graphical breakthroughs.

Skullgirls features the unique art of Alex Ahad whose work has been featured in Lava Punch, Udon's Street Fighter Tribute, and Scott Pilgrim; and the gameplay genius of renowned tournament champion Mike "Mike Z" Zaimont. Skullgirls will be published by Autumn Games in 2011.

Fall 2012 UpdateNov 26, 2012

Hello Reverge fans and friends!  It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a chance to give you an update, and with the recent release of the first Skullgirls patch, this is a good time.

More than a hundred people around the world put in months of long hours and dedicated effort on Skullgirls writing code, making art, and scripting gameplay and cinematics. We are proud to have enabled this enormous effort to make Skullgirls into a commercial game.

As anyone familiar with our industry knows, the time directly after shipping a game is the most difficult for any developer. Some of you may have heard that Reverge is currently not engaged to work on Skullgirls. While we kept our entire team together for as long as we could, we eventually had to make the difficult decision to make some layoffs in order to stay in business.

Layoffs are always a terrible situation, so we were happy to hear that Autumn Games was able to give Skullgirls Creator Alex Ahad and Lead Gameplay Designer Mike Zaimont the chance to expand and ultimately ship the Skullgirls patch.  We wish them great success with their new venture, Lab Zero Games.  If you have any questions about the status of Skullgirls, please contact Autumn Games directly. Autumn is the only official source of information about Skullgirls sales, development details and budgets, and future plans.

Meanwhile, the artists, and designers, and programmers at Reverge Labs continue forward with our company goals of creating new technology and game designs to fit the rapidly changing landscape of digitally distributed video games.

I wish everyone Happy Holidays and many more hours of fun playing Skullgirls,

-Richard Wyckoff, CEO

It’s been a few weeks since our last Fan Art Friday – Evo happened, and we’ve been finalizing the patch and working on the first DLC character.

Speaking of art, did you see the Evo prize envelopes? All eight Evo winners received a unique piece of art, stuffed with money! They’re pretty amazing (and hilarious), so be sure to check them out!

You can always submit your own fan art to fanart@revergelabs.com, and be sure to let me know how you’d like to be credited!

Daughter-Thurssay, A.K.A. Xoves, drew this heartwarming-yet-unlikely scenario.

Clearly, that is Double in disguise… run away, Parasoul!

Fan Art Friday is back!

Next week is a big week! No, not the 4th of July – we’ll be at Evo 2012 running our side-tournament, so don’t expect an installment of Fan Art Friday. We’ll try to return in fine form the following week, though!

You can always submit your own fan art to fanart@revergelabs.com, and be sure to let me know how you’d like to be credited!

Shallow Boobstick Whiteboard Wednesday!Jun 13, 2012

Between work and E3, it’s been a chaotic couple of weeks.

The title of today’s entry comes from a letter sent in by a fan, extolling the myriad virtues of Skullgirls, but one phrase stood out: “shallow boobstick.” This fan felt our story mode showed us to have a distinct lack of these, so the artists decided to draw one.

Hopefully this installment of Whiteboard Wednesday will mark a return to normalcy… that is, if you can call any of this “normal.”

Learning from Sandwiches Whiteboard Wednesday!May 23, 2012

The Reverge Labs crew loves sandwiches. We get these succulent stacks of starch and savories at least twice a week.

Hawaii was once known as the Sandwich Islands, but they don’t actually have any. But some of the best sandwiches actually hail from another island: Cuba.

Surprisingly, Vietnam is also home to an amazing sandwich, the Bahn Mi. Like their signature noodle soup, Pho, the Bahn Mi is the culinary aftermath of the country’s time as a French colony.

Both of these sandwiches frequently share a single ingredient, a veritable culinary Philosopher’s Stone: pork.

…We could learn a lot from those sandwiches.

Also: here is some whiteboard art.

Dinnertime Fun Whiteboard Wednesday!May 17, 2012

“Artists abhor a void.” Even if that void might be obscured by large amounts of pasta.

Last night we had a send-off for a coworker who is heading north on a new adventure, and between the gorging and (drunken) gabbing, Jon, Mariel and Paul filled their tablecloth with art.

So in addition to some of our usual highly topical and equally random whiteboard art, we’ve got a ton of tablecloth doodles for you, too!

From everyone at Reverge Labs, we wish you the best, Rick!

Hmmm… anything new to report?

…Well, there is… nope.

But what about…? Gah, can’t talk about that, either.

There’s always the… dammit, already covered that.

Yup, everything is dull and boring, so let’s just get to the good stuff, shall we?

Things continue apace – there really isn’t anything new to say about this.

As you may have seen from our Official Fan Art, we work with a veritable army of awesome people, but this isn’t limited to just those visual-types.

No, in fact this extends to our aural artists, our fantastic voice cast! When they aren’t talenting it up in the studio, they’re doping around in the game and having a great time.

And, hmm… I’m not paid to provide punditry, but… am I seeing a theme in these recent Whiteboard Wednesdays?
